On My Bookshelf - Jason Herman

Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

In this spiritually challenging work, author Dietrich Bonhoeffer encourages those who would call themselves disciples to live a faithful and holy life. He charges; “Cheap grace is the moral enemy of our church. Our struggle today is for costly grace.”

The Church On The Other Side by Brian D. McLaren

This is by far the best ministry book I have read. McLaren offers a picture of what the church on the other side of modernism should and must look like.

Working The Angles: The Shape Of Pastoral Integrity by Eugene H. Peterson

Peterson’s book is a good reminder to pastors, and all Christians really, that Christ’s disciples must be firmly grounded in prayer, scripture, and have a good overall sense of spiritual direction in order to effectively lead in the church.

The Logic Of Evangelism by William J. Abraham

Abraham challenges the church to consider evangelism as the early Christians first did. It is not to be used as a method of church growth, but rather, it is to be construed as primary initiation into the Kingdom of God.

Christian Ethics by J. Philip Wogaman

This is a one-volume overview of the history of Christian ethics. Wogaman does an excellent job of presenting some of the most critical ethical, moral, and philosophical questions that have faced Christianity.
