On My Bookshelf - Chad Higgins

The Bible

The first book that any Christian (or seeker of God’s truth) should own and actually read is the Bible. God’s Word is timeless and powerful – able to divide all “truths” into a simple reality: God is the I AM. As far as translations go, my strict recommendation is to get the specific translation that you will read with frequency!! If an older translation is too difficult for you to digest, by all means, get one more contemporary with your understanding. However, if the more contemporary language leaves you cold, immerse yourself in an older translation that brings you joy. The fact remains, if you want to own the “perfect” translation – but it sits on your shelf 99% of the week, you’ve accomplished nothing. Come into each reading with prayer, asking that God will move in and through you as you read, and that the Spirit will make clear the words, as He writes them on your heart. Find a translation that you can read and read it often! Only then will you be able to read other works and make sense of them.

Prayer: Finding The Heart's True Home by Richard Foster

If you have to own a single religious book, you must buy Foster’s book on prayer. As he describes God as the home where every heart desires to be, he asserts that prayer is the key that unlocks the door to that house. This book is filled with different types of prayer experiences, spanning the gamut of the human experience.

In Search of Wonder: A Call To Worship Renewal by Anderson, Cope, Harris, Lucado, Reese, Shank

In Search of Wonder: A Call to Worship Renewal is a multi-authored book from writers within the Restoration Movement. This work seeks to pull out seven areas of interest in the quest for renewing our worship. Each author brings his own style and flavor to the idea of worship renewal.

Refelections On The Psalms by C.S. Lewis

Reflections on the Psalms is C.S. Lewis’ attempt to bring his experiences in the psalms - as one worshipper to another. As only Lewis can, he blends the beauty of the written word with insight and discovery to make a non-technical, yet informative piece of literature on a blessed section of God’s Word: the Psalms.

With Glad And Generous Hearts: A Personal Look At Sunday Worship by William Willimon

Though written through the lens as a Methodist member, Willimon takes great care in walker the worshiper through the Sunday morning experience, revealing nuggets of wisdom at every movement. His section on communion is quite wonderful, and is fleshed in detail in another of his books, Sunday Dinner, which I would also recommend.
