If you have missed class the last few weeks, please make plans to come be a part of this new series. See the little blurp below about our topic and we look forward to seeing you!
Room: 207
Topic – “Jesus and John”
Jesus and John
What is it like to literally be "close to Jesus?" What is the reward? What is the cost? What does the apostle John know about Jesus that no one else does? What caused him to tell the story so differently? Could we actually "walk with Jesus" as John did?
New Lesson Series Begins May 2nd
Beginning Sunday, May 2nd, Jon will once again be presenting our class lessons. The topic is Minding the Soul: Adventures in Spiritual Depth. The source materials for class include the following books. Jon has challenged us to read one or more of them in the next 13 weeks. Hopefully, each of you has a copy of AT LEAST the first one!
- New Testament
- Becoming Adult, Becoming Christian: Adult Development and Christian Faith – James W. Fowler
- A Hidden Wholeness: The Journey Toward an Undivided Life – Parker J. Palmer
- Tending to the Holy: The Practice of the Presence of God in Ministry – Bruce G. Epperly and Katherine Gould Epperly
- The Holy Longing: The Search for Christian Spirituality – Ronald Rolheiser
Here is a peek of the questions you can expect during the introductory session:
-
What is the relationship between you and your soul? Are you your soul? Is your soul you?
-
What is the current condition of your soul? Use five words to describe it and one paragraph to elucidate your descriptors.
-
Is your soul a separate entity from your spirit? If so, what is the difference?
-
If something happens to you, does it also happen to your soul?
-
Can you lose your own soul? What does that mean to you?
-
What does your soul see, hear or sense, if anything, that you cannot?

No Shoes This Sunday!
This program is organized by Soles for Souls who distribute a pair of shoes every nine seconds somewhere in the world. As of this posting, they have given out over 8.4 MILLION pairs of shoes to those without.
Minister Parking
A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: 'I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't park here, I'll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses.' When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note 'I've circled this block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket I'll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation.'

The Young Pros Are on Twitter
Twitter has many uses, and yes, it is different than Facebook. We will be using our Twitter feed for many different things. These will include class event reminders, links to articles, "retweeting" posts by other Christians, posting pictures, broadcasting live from events, staying connected, and whatever else we think might benefit you. HOCC is committed to authentic community. Twitter is a simple way that we can stay in touch and stay informed. It is my hope that this will be one more way we stay connected while remembering that fellowship and church can (and should) happen Monday through Saturday as well. Many of us already use Facebook and don't want another service to update. You can link your Twitter and Facebook accounts so that updating Twitter also updates your Facebook! There are also other services that you can use to update multiple social networking sites at simultaneously, such as Tweetdeck.
If you have Twitter questions or want to know other ways we can use it, send an email to the Web Development Team at cgt@hocc.org.
Highland Oaks is a participating broadcast site. Join us for this free event as questions from around the country representing American's fears and worries are addressed. Click the link below for more information.

New Lesson Series
On Sunday we begin a new series that is focused on Jesus. The book that Trey and I have been reading in preparation is formatted into questions that people ask about Jesus. That got us wondering if you had questions that you had never asked, or had never been answered well, or that others have asked you about Jesus.
We want to offer you the chance to ask those questions of our class! Our hope is that this is a series about how our community understands Jesus and comparing our understanding with the Bible. You can reply to Trey and I with your questions. If you would like us to keep the questions anonymous, we certainly will.
We are looking forward to this conversation with you!
Grace and peace,
Rhesa (and Trey)
Service Opportunity Brainstorming
Over the last few weeks we have spent some of our LifeGroup and Home Team time discussing our past service projects. These projects have helped us reach beyond our class and church and make a difference in the lives of those in our communities.
During our January LifeGroup meeting, we spent some time thinking of new projects and service opportunities that we might carry out in the coming months. While many great ideas were suggested, we would like to hear even more ideas for ways our class might become involved in the lives of our friends, coworkers, neighbors, and communities. If you have any suggestions for service opportunities, no matter how large or how small, contact Alicia or Paul with your ideas.
For more information about past and future outreach projects, visit our Outreach page.

Where: Mt. Lebanon Camp in Cedar Hill, Texas

This event was excellent last year, and we would love to see our class well represented this year!
Men – we face some incredible pressures in this world as Christian men to keep our faith first, our finances in order, and our families faithful. It is a delicate balancing act. If you feel like you sometimes drop the ball – then join the club.
Our upcoming retreat just for men is focused on how to keep all the balls in the air. If you think you have it figured out how to keep all of the balls in the air, then come so you can teach the rest of us. If you struggle with any of these, then come learn and be blessed by the wisdom of other men and by God’s word.
We are privileged to have Greg Beauchamp who grew up at Highland Oaks to be our speaker. Greg is very active in men’s ministries across the area and has much to share on these important topics. You will enjoy the fellowship as well as be challenged by God’s word and other Christian men.
