Noah’s son Shem was the most blessed of Noah’s three sons. 10 generations later, Terah became the father of Abram. God had chosen Abram before time began. He favored his family line so that Abram (Abraham) would become the father of a great nation. God has called all people, as sons of Abraham, for great things. We need to see ourselves as being chosen “for eternity” rather than merely chosen for today or even for our lifetime. In Christ, we live “eternity” today.

Abram had settled with his family in Ur of the Chaldeans. God calls Abram to leave everything and “go to the land I will show you.” Obedience to God’s call is essential to being available for His work – even when we don’t know where God is leading us. There are sacrifices to be made when God calls His people. But blessings far outweigh the sacrifice. The choice “to move” on God’s call is ultimately ours to make. This lesson will focus on following, hearing, leaving and obeying.

Abram gave Lot his choice of which way to go when it was time for them to separate. Lot chose what appears to be the better land, but its proximity to Sodom and Gomorrah eventually costs him (14:12; 19:26). What was gained in Abram allowing Lot to choose first? Sometimes what initially looks to be “loss” is really “gain” and vice versa. As with the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, what looked like loss was really victory. How does this reflect Jesus’ teaching about being a servant to all?

God makes a promise to Abram – promising his offspring will be as numerous as the stars in the sky. What is often missed in this text is that Abram believed God and it was credited as righteousness. What does it really mean to believe God? Do we have the kind of faith Abram displayed when he believed God? Jesus told Thomas, Christians are “blessed” because they have not seen (Christ) and still believe. Are we a believing people like Abraham and the kind of believing people Jesus anticipates we should be?

Abram “speeds up” the process of having the offspring God promised. Abram believed God would give him offspring and build a nation after his name, but he wasn’t patient in seeing how God would do it. Taking matters into his own hands, Abram moved ahead of God’s plans. If he had waited only 14 years longer, things would have been done God’s way. Abram asks for God to bless Ishmael anyway (17:18) but God remains steady with His plan. How frequently do we intend to do God’s things, but we don’t wait to do them God’s way? In this lesson we will look at the tension between believing and waiting.

There appears to be 13 years of silence (inferred between 16:16 and 17:1) between Abram and God. Was this a result of Abram taking matters into his own hands? We can’t be sure. But we can ask, “How do we behave when God seems “silent” or “distant?” St. John of the Cross called these moments “the dark night of the soul.” God eventually changed Abram and Sarai’s names because He was blessing them. What do we learn from this portion of Abraham and Sarah’s life? How are we different living in the reality that is Christ Jesus as Lord?

Three promises are kept in this chapter: 1) the birth of Isaac; 2) God promises to spare Ishmael; 3) the treaty between Abimelech and Abraham. God is consistent when He makes a promise. How well do we keep our promises? Jesus has made a promise He will return to take us to be with Him and He has promised the Holy Spirit (John 14). Are we living with confidence in God’s promises?

Even when circumstances of our life don’t make sense, do we remain faithful to God? Abraham trusted God and it was credited to him as righteousness. Obedience and faith have a strong corollary that brings blessing in life (22:18). In what ways is our faith put to the test and how do we respond?

Abraham left a legacy of faith for generations to follow. What legacy of faith do we leave behind? Abraham relied on God to provide Isaac with a wife. Do we live our lives with a sense of “legacy” even in some decisions we might see as routine? We have the opportunity to leave a legacy of faith we behind us that will last for generations to come. What kind of legacy will we leave and how actively do we choose to influence that legacy?
